SHORT MAT BOWLS

On the 13 September 1990, Mr Bob Lister, together with his late wife Rene, Mr Ken Buller and Mrs Sally Thorpe, and other friends, joined together with the idea of starting up a short m at bowls club in Hingham, for the enjoyment of local people.

​To start the club off, 2 mats were hired and brought to the hall in a van.  Raffles, plant sales, etc. were held to raise money.  They named this Club Hingham Short Mat Bowls Club and gradually gained members and all these members proceeded to learn the game as it should be played under the ESMBA rules.  We are still increasing membership today with 54 members.

​in 2006 the then Chairman of the Club, Mr Roy Naish, applied for a lottery grant and the application was very successful.  The grant received was for £2,379 and with this money he made sure all members of the Club were kitted out with a uniform and he also had sufficient money to purchase mats and equipment for the Club.

​Hingham Short Mat Bowls Club also play in League games, - Breckland League, South Norfolk League and the Summer League and the league players thoroughly enjoy the competitiveness of these games.  We are not "high-flyers" and always top of the league, but neither are we "low-flyers" at the bottom.

​We have recently started playing in the Afternoon League with some members who do not play in the other leagues.  There are about 4-5 Clubs in this league and everyone thoroughly enjoys the afternoon matches with the other Clubs.

​We also play in friendly games, of which our club/individual members have won a couple of trophies/cups.  We will have to consider the purchase of a trophy cabinet!  We also have internal competitions which are great fun.
